Microwave Optics

C. L. Andrews

The Physics Teacher -- February 1964 -- Volume 2, Issue 2, pp. 55

Online Publication Date: Sep 2006

Show Abstract
Electromagnetic waves may now be demonstrated and studied as simply and inexpensively as sound waves, waves in strings, and waves in ripple tanks. Do-it-yourself sources, receivers, and experimental arrangements for standing waves, interference in thin films, Young's experiment, Lloyd's mirror, polarization, and Doppler effect are described. Teachers and students are currently making contributions to the study and application of microwave optics.

Show Abstract
Science teaching, both in school and university, is geared very closely to utilitarian aims. Has it also an important contribution to make a liberal education? This article argues that it has, but that its opportunities are not being seized. Various ways of improving on the present state of affairs are discussed.

APPARATUS FOR TEACHING PHYSICS: Overhead Projection in the Teaching of High School Physics

Show Abstract
Physics teachers are finding that the overhead projector can help them teach physics. These quiet, trouble-free projectors provide bright, clear images even in lighted rooms. It is practical to use them for projecting images from large, transparent slides, as well as for projecting images of many three-dimensioned objects of physics.
Here is a visual aid that projects directly the ideas of the teacher. The teacher is an integral part of the entire process but with a larger and more colorful impact.
